Running is not a very safe sport for older people. When you run, your foot strikes the ground with a force equal to three times your body weight. Put your hands over the muscles in front of your upper leg, while you run in place. As your foot hits the ground, you will feel your muscles shaking like jelly. This sudden jarring that occurs when your foot hits the ground causes the muscles to stretch while they contract, which causes minute tears in the muscle fibers, to increase your chances of injuring yourself.
When you pedal a bicycle, put your hands in the same place. You will feel that the smooth rotary motion of pedaling causes no jarring or shaking. Pedaling is far less likely to injure you than running and you can recover much faster from pedaling.
